INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF ENTERING THE NORWEGIAN WORKING LIFE BY COMPLETING HIGHER VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
Are you a refugee/immigrant/immigrant worker with education or work experience from the health or upbringing sector, and would you like to participate in an educational course that will increase your chances of entering the Norwegian working life?
Through the Directorate of Higher Education and Skills, AOF Østfold applied for and received the opportunity to implement a project aimed at giving refugees, migrants and migrant workers the opportunity to pursue higher vocational education (vocational school) to acquire the relevant skills for entering the Norwegian working life.
By increasing your knowledge of Norwegian, getting training in professional languages, acquiring knowledge of working life and knowledge of the Norwegian education system, as well as completing an education thateither supplements or formalizes the knowledge acquired in your home country, there will be a significant chance of securing a job in the health or upbringing sector.
The study programs consist of two modules:
Module 1 – Prequalification (6 months)
Module 2 – Vocational school education in mental health work (12 months)
Completed upper secondary education in health or childcare filds
or
Completed another upper secondary education + 8700 hours of work experience in health or childcare.
If you do not have access to the documents proving that you have the correct education or work experience, we will conduct a skills test that assesses your knowledge in the health or childcare sector.
For those who have the right to complete the Introductory program, Norwegian training will be part of this program.
Upon completing Module 1, you progress to Module 2, where you commence higher vocational education in Mental Health Work (language requirement B1 in Norwegian).
Upon completing Module 1, the goal is for you to have attained language level B1 and progress to Module 2, where you will commence higher vocational education in Mental Health Work.
Upon completion of Module 1, you will receive a module certificate.
Module 2 – Vocational School Education in Mental Health Work (12 months)
The Mental Health Care Vocational Education program consists of 5 modules, each with practical components integrated into the curriculum.
Classes will be held Monday through Friday. Additionally, in the first module, there will be an enhanced focus on task writing and language training aimed at mastering the specialized terminology used in vocational education. The practical component in this module will be aligned with the content of the vocational education program.
Competence in mental health work is in demand in Norwegian working life both within the health sector and the upbringing sector, as mental illness affects people of all ages.At the same time, mental health work is an area of focus for public authorities both nationally and internationally.If you later return to your home country, the skills you acquire in this study will also be able to be used there.
Upon completion of Module 2 – Vocational School of Mental Health Work, the aim is for you to have reached the B2 level in Norwegian.
In addition to receiving instruction in the topics outlined in the curriculum for the Mental Health Care Vocational Education program, Module 1 will also provide training in specialized terminology to enhance your comprehension of theoretical teachings. This module will also focus on task writing, aimed at completing Task 1, which is a requirement for passing the module. It serves as a common module for several vocational education programs, offering the opportunity to pursue other specializations besides mental health care if desired.
Modules 2 to 4 delve deeper into mental health care, while Module 5 is the concluding module where you will write an in-depth assignment and orally defend it.
The education program includes two practical periods. The first takes place during Module 1, while the second occurs during Modules 3 and 4. Throughout both practical periods, you will be supervised by both the vocational school’s mentor and the mentor at the practical site.

Upon successfully completing the education, a vocational certificate is awarded for a vocational school degree (Professional degree) in Mental Health Work, comprising 60 credits.

They do not work in psychiatry or perform tasks related to psychiatry, but they aim to acquire knowledge in mental health work. This is because many individuals, including children, youth, adults, and elderly, face mental health challenges. Those who choose to enroll in this education program often feel the nees for understanding and handling individuals with mental health issues in their daily work at nursing homes, schools etc.
The activities coordinator works in residences, day centers, work centers ( for the elderly and disabled), preschools, after-schools programs, schools, institutions for substance abusers, prisons, as well as among employees in private and public enterprises.
The healthcare worker operates in specialized healthcare services, in mental health care at all levels, and in institutions and various care and treatment facilities in municipal and private sectors.
As a child and youth worker, you can find employment in daycare centers, children’s parks, schools, after schools programs, clubs, and municipal agencies.
The porter works in healthcare institutions such as public and private hospitals and nursing homes.
The environmental worker can work in daycare centers, schools, after-school programs, recreational clubs, and other municipal agencies. With a professional certificate as child and youth worker, healthcare worker, or activities coordinator, the education in interdisciplinary environmental work aims to provide students with interdisciplinary broad expertise in environmental work and a specialzed self-selected focus in one of the following areas: children and youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, refugees/ asylum seekers, people with mental health problems, and people with substance abuse problems.

The Norwegian test: The first Norwegian test is free if you have the right and obligation to complete Norwegian training.A charge will then apply.
The education program lasts a total of 1.5 years (pre-qualification for 6 months and vocational education for 12 months), with classes scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 15:00 PM.
Location of Instruction:
The classes wil be held at our learning center in the middle of Fredrikstad, just 2 min from the bus terminal and about 10 min from the train station.
